DID Keningau

Administrative District Of DID Keningau is situated in the Interior of Sabah approximately 150 km from Kota Kinabalu. The Administrative District of DID Keningau covers 3 districts and 1 sub-district with a total area of 12,031 km². The districts are Keningau, Tenom, Nabawan and the sub-district of Sook. Its main office, build in 1972, is situated in Keningau town and have now moved into the new office build in the same compound and was completed in 1993. In order to ensure the smooth and efficient implementation of duties, supporting offices has been setup in Tenom and Sook town.

There are 107 personnels in the whole Administrative District of Keningau headed by a Senior Irrigation and Drainage Engineer, Grade J2. He is assisted by a Drainage and Irrigation Engineer, Grade J3 and a Mechanical Engineer, Grade J3. The main duties carried out in the district are:-

• To plan and implement the Department's works in line with its policies and functions.

• To operate and maintain Irrigation and Drainage Schemes. This include minor irrigation schemes planted by farmers with small areas in order to assist their product output. The Irrigation and Drainage Schemes in the district are as follows:-

• To operate and maintain major urban drainage system that includes major trunk drains. Secondary drains and drains that are located within housing development areas are maintained by the local authority. Whereas road-side drains are maintained by the Public Works Department.

• To plan and implement river conservancy works. River conservancy is a very important traditional function of DID. Works carried out include removing debris from rivers that restrict the smooth flow, river dredging and straightening. On average the Administrative District of Keningau conserve 139 numbers of rivers with a total length of 303 km every year.
