DID Sandakan

The Administrative District of DID Sandakan is situated in the East Coast of the State of Sabah. Its office is located on the 3rd Floor of the Sandakan Mini Secretariat, Mile 7, Labuk Road in Sandakan. It is the largest administrative district of DID in the State. It covers 4 districts; they are the Sandakan District (2,266 km²), the Kinabatangan and Tongod District (17,594 km²) and Beluran District (8,345 km²) with a total area of approximately 28,205 km².

The Administrative District of DID Sandakan has 32 personnels headed by an Irrigation and Drainage Engineer, Grade J3.

The Trusan Sapi Irrigation Scheme, situated in the District of Beluran is the only irrigation scheme for wet padi cultivation in the district.

The major activity here is the cultivation of oil palm and cocoa. Development works here consist mainly of developing drainage schemes and urban drainage works. The main duties carried out in the district are:-

• To plan and implement the Department's works in line with its policies and functions.

• To operate and maintain Irrigation and Drainage Schemes.

• To operate and maintain major urban drainage system that includes major trunk drains. Secondary drains and drains that are in housing development are maintained by the local authority. Whereas road-side drains are maintained by the Public Works Department.

• To plan and implement river conservancy works. River conservancy is a very important traditional function of DID. Works carried out include removing debris from rivers that restrict the smooth flow, river dredging and straightening. On average the Administrative District of Sandakan conserve 14 numbers of rivers with a total length of 31 km every year.
